Crete

Crete is the fifth largest island amongst the Mediterranean Islands but is Greece's own largest island. Although one of the beauties of Crete is that it has managed to remain very much the same with its own local culture including its own Cretan wine which remains their traditional drink, their own local music, which the country has become known for due to its traditional dances and their own local language know as Cretan Greek, the Cretans class themselves as Greeks.

One reason which makes Crete so popular with tourists is its location, it was the centre of the Minoan Civilisation, the eldest Greek Civilisation which therefore means it is holds ancient history within it country, some of this includes the classic site of Gortys. Crete also has its own international airport called Nikos Kazantzakis which is located in its capital city of Herkalion also known as Iraklio.

Herkalion is both the capital of Crete but also the fifth largest city in Greece. Herkalion is fast becoming a modern city in Crete and though this makes it lack some of the old cultural charm that other areas of Crete has to offer, it still remains a diverse city. With chic little shops and boutiques and a growing number of restaurants and cafes being built within the area the city is becoming more and more attractive.

Further into the inland of Crete amongst the hillsides on the Bucolic vistas which a full of vines and olive trees you will find Crete's very popular and prime wine producing region.
