Majorca
Mallorca, spelt in English as Majorca, is an extremely popular holiday destination for lots of British holiday makers. Located in Spain it is the countries biggest island surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea, and is also part of the Balearic Islands.
The capital of Mallorca is Palma which got its name for the Roman camp Palmaria, the founder of Palma. Palma has had a history of wars, with it suffering from several vandal sacking's through out the fall of the Roman Empire; it wasn't until 1983 that Palma became the capital of the beautiful Balearic Islands.
Mallorca has had a turbulent history with the Spanish Civil war which saw them have to protect their country from being overtaken by the Republicans in 1936, whose aim was to push out the Nationalists of Mallorca. However Nationalists managed to out force the Republicans and get their country back, this has since famously become known as the battle of Mallorca.
Since then Mallorca's popularity with tourists visiting their country has grown massively going from 500,000 visiting in 1960 to 22,832,865 visiting in 2008. This has also helped Spain receive workers from mainland Spain, and it has also resulted in Palma growing massively.
Mallorca is hugely popular amongst families who go for relaxing summer breaks, but it is also extremely popular with the younger generation who are looking for sun, sea, sand and parties! The northern parts of Mallorca, including Palma Nova and Magaluf are the most popular areas for the party goers with British holiday makers being the main targets, particularly in Magaluf and Palma many of the bars are being made more towards the British than ever before.
